Lake Natron is one of Tanzania's most dramatic and lesser-known natural wonders, located in the northeast near the Kenyan border, beneath the towering Ol Doinyo Lengai (the sacred Maasai volcano). Known for its red-hued alkaline waters and massive flocks of lesser flamingos, Lake Natron is an otherworldly landscape shaped by salt flats, volcanic rock, and mineral-rich hot springs. The area offers adventurous travelers a unique mix of scenic beauty, birdlife, Maasai culture, and off-the-beaten-path exploration.
Popular activities include:
Flamingo walks along the lake’s shores
Hiking to the Ngare Sero waterfalls through a canyon
Cultural visits to Maasai villages
Optional Ol Doinyo Lengai summit climb (overnight trek)
Lake Natron is one of the most important breeding sites in the world for lesser flamingos:
Lesser Flamingo (millions gather between June–October)
Greater Flamingo
Avocets
Pelicans
Black-winged Stilts
Sandpipers
Herons and Egrets
Birdwatching is exceptional, especially in the dry season when water levels drop and birds congregate along the lake edges.
