Why Climb Mount Meru?
Mount Meru is one of Africa's most rewarding but underrated treks. Standing at 4,562 metres (14,968 feet), it is Tanzania's second highest mountain and Africa's fifth highest peak. Unlike Kilimanjaro — which draws tens of thousands of climbers each year — Meru sees far fewer visitors, giving you a wilder, more personal mountain experience.
From the summit on a clear morning, you will see Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds — one of the most spectacular views in all of East Africa.

Day 1 – Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut (2,514m)
Your trek begins at Momella Gate (1,500m), entering Arusha National Park. The trail passes through beautiful montane forest where you may encounter colobus monkeys, buffalo and giraffe. After approximately 4–5 hours you arrive at Miriakamba Hut for your first night.
Day 2 – Miriakamba to Saddle Hut (3,570m)
Today's hike climbs steeply through open moorland to Saddle Hut (3,570m). En route you pass the dramatic Meru Crater — a massive volcanic caldera with walls dropping hundreds of metres. Total hiking time: 5–6 hours.
Day 3 – Summit Night and Descent to Miriakamba
You begin your summit push at midnight or 1am. The final ridge — known as the Inner Rim — is narrow with steep drops on both sides, requiring care and concentration. You reach Socialist Peak (4,562m) at dawn to watch the sunrise over Kilimanjaro. Return to Saddle Hut for breakfast, then descend all the way to Miriakamba Hut.
Day 4 – Miriakamba to Momella Gate
The final morning descent returns through the forest, with one last chance to spot wildlife before reaching Momella Gate and returning to Arusha.
Is Mount Meru Good Acclimatization for Kilimanjaro?
Yes — absolutely. Many experienced climbers recommend doing Meru before Kilimanjaro. Summiting Meru helps your body adapt to high altitude and gives you a realistic preview of high-altitude trekking. The combined Meru and Kilimanjaro itinerary is popular with climbers who want to maximize summit success on Kili.
